if x^3-y^3 = n is an eqn and here only the value of n is given and no other info or eqns than how can i determine the value of x and y?

You can not find "the" value (singular) for x and y, because there are infinitely-many solutions. Solve the equation for one of the variables in terms of the other; for instance, y in terms of x:

. . . . .\(\displaystyle y\, =\, \sqrt[3]{\strut x^3\, -\, n\,}\)

Then pick any x-value you like, and there will be a corresponding y-value. There is no one solution. Sorry. ;)
