15 = -7y

the answer is -(15/7)

Can someone run me through the steps to get to that answer?

EDIT:-7*y/-7 = 15/-7 = -(15/7)

[math]15 = -7y[/math]
We need to get y by itself. We do that by dividing both sides by -7:
[math]\dfrac{15}{-7} = \dfrac{-7y}{-7}[/math]
[math]-\dfrac{15}{7} = y[/math]

Perhaps you're getting confused with the position on the negative sign.
Consider this \(\displaystyle 6\div{-3} =\frac{6}{-3}=-\frac{6}{3}=-2\).
