How to solve the folowing problem?

A band is streched around the equator. (Assume the Earth is a smooth round ball.) If the band is extended by ten feet, what will be the distance between the original band and the new band?

You have the circumference formula for a circle. What equation do you get from this for the length of the original band, assuming a radius "r" for the Earth?

If this length is increased by 10, what expression do you get for the new radius "R" in terms of the old radius "r"?

Thank you.

Eliz.
