I partake in a fantasy football game where it's possible work out a players monitary values using the stats provided but I seem unable to find the correct equation to work out how to correctly do this.

Here is an example:

Name - 'Player A'
Age - 23
foot - Right footed
Shooting - 7
Movement - 6
Passing - 9
Control - 8
Speed - 9
Stamina - 8
Heading - 7
Strength - 8
Aggresion - 8
Tackling - 9
Judgement - 6
Vision - 5
Overall - 90
value - 15,212,960

now obviously I can see all the stats added together equal 90 hence why overal rating in 90 (maximum each individual stat can go to is 10). The only other information I have to go on is his 'positional value' which is 34 (this is the players value in his best position comprised by adding together his control, passing, speed and stamina... 9,8,9,8 = 34). And untrainable value of 28 (untrainable values comprised of speed, aggression, judgement and vision).

apparantly there is a way to work his value of 15,212,960 by doing an math equation using the stats I've mentioned but I can't get near it... Can anyone help?

There are an infinite number of equations ("functions" is actually the technical word) that can convert 90 and 34 into 15,212,960.

Here are two examples

\(\displaystyle 1,252 * \left(\dfrac{90}{2}\right)^2 * \sqrt{34 + 2} + 1160 = 15,212,960\) and

\(\displaystyle 5,264 * (90 - 5) * 34 =15,212,960.\)

There are techniques for finding a "simple" function that will approximate an unknown function, but those techniques to be reliable require many more examples than one.

Thank you Jeff, but how do you get the 5,264 in the second equation?
i can see where everything else comes in I.e. (90-5) is the overall - vision and then multiplied by position value(34).

just the equation can apparently be found using the stats I originally posted and I can't find a way of getting 5,265 to begin the equation .. Sorry for being a simpleton

I am sorry. My answer was not clear. What I was trying to show is that there are many many ways (infinite in fact) to manipulate one or more numbers to get another number. I was NOT trying to show what the actual function is. It's like pointing to Time's Square and saying who is "the" person in the square? There are lots of persons there. I can say who is a person and what is a pigeon, but the person I pick out may not be the right person.

Because there are an infinite number of possibilities, there is no way to "reverse engineer" back to the "correct" answer. Make sense? What can be done is this. Suppose you gave me a whole bunch of these triplets, meaning multiple examples of two input numbers and one output number computed according to the unknown formula. There are then techniques either for finding a "relatively" simple formula that will account exactly for the given examples but may be very wrong or for finding a much simpler formula that will account approximately for the given examples and have a reasonable probability of being close. In neither case, however, can we be sure that we have found the correct formula. There are too many possibilities to choose among.

In all probability, the actual formula is not very complex and, given a sufficient number of examples, a very good approximation to the actual formula, perhaps the actual formula itself, can be found, but there will always be some chance that you are wrong.

This is all a very long way of saying that your question is not answerable.

Ah I see where your coming from, I've tried a few formulas but got no where as my knowledge isn't that good. I know if two people in this game that have worked out the formula but won't share so thought it was worth asking more knowledge full people such as yourself!

As I said, if you have more than one example, there are ways to estimate the formula. If that formula is simple enough, you may be able to find it exactly. If you find other examples, come back and ask again in a new thread. One example is just not enough of a clue to go on.

Ok here are a few more examples...

Player 1 - 28(age), 6,9,8,7,9,9,6,7,9,8,7,6 - 91 overall, 35 position value (movement,passing, speed, stamina), 31 untrainable stat value - 15,820,057 cash value

Player 2 - 25(age), 7,6,8,6,4,7,7,9,5,9,9,6 - 83 overall, 34 positional value(strength, heading, tackling, judgement), 24 untrainable stat - 5,442,042 cash value.

Player 3 - 23(age), 7,6,9,8,8,4,6,7,4,6,8,9 - 82 overall, 34 positional value (passing, control, judgement, vision), 29 untrainable value - 5,504,927

Player 4 - 20(age), 9,8,7,7,9,7,4,4,9,4,7,8 - 83 overall, 33 positional value(shooting, movement, control,speed), 33 untrainable value - 3,235,357 cash value
