Hello! I'm reading this mathematical classic, and may have several questions. Rather than spam the board, I will put them all in this thread. First question, what does it mean when a number has a subscript and a superscript? I cannot provide an image for I am typing on my iPod. Tx in advance!

It may be time to back up and read something more fundamental.

Superscripts generally mean exponents, although there certainly are other uses.
Subscripts, could be a couple of things. Sometimes Base and other times just a differentiator or sequence counter.

I find myself in the condition of semi-extreme embarrassment...

Of course, I have seen recursive series and exponents for the past 2 years... but when I all of a sudden see them together on a printed page in front of the same variable, It evokes a very strong sense of mental block... ie. I should have known that it was an exponent.

forever shamed,
Nick
