 Are all functions linear? Is it possible for a parabola to also be a function? (I know that to be a function, there must be only one range for every domain). Would someone please explain to me the finer details? I guessed the forum considering the fact that my problem is rather impromptu.

I suppose if you graph a parabola, it passes the line test, but how does it relate to the fact that every square has 2 square roots? Like y=x^2. Are there two parabolas??? :?: I am sooooo confused right now...

Only Linear functions are Linear.

Parabola can, indeed, be functions. Some parabolas are not functions.

Think about DIRECTION. Convince yourself which is Domain and which is Range.

(-2)^2 = 4
(2)^2 = 4

Domain: -2 and 2
Range: 4

"one range for every domain" does NOT mean the same as "one domain for every range". It is OK for different Domain values to produce identical Range values. Consider the line y = 5. It is a function even though ALL Domain values result in 5 from the Range.

Clear as mud?
