In the problem, g(x) = |3x - 1|- 5, is the number between the two "|'s", the "3x - 1" part, the notation for "the set of"; in other words, "all combinations satisfying that equation"? Or does it mean something else?

The given is just a definition of a function: \(\displaystyle g(x)=\left|{3x-1}\right|-5\)
The function g finds the absolute value of three times the number minus one and then subtracts 5 from that.
Here are some examples.
\(\displaystyle \begin{gathered} g(3) = 8 - 5 = 3 \hfill \\ g( - 3) = 10 - 5 = 5 \hfill \\ g(0) = 1 - 5 = - 4 \hfill \\ g( - 5) = 16 - 5 = 11 \hfill \\ \end{gathered}\)
