OK!
I get the basic concept of Function Notation. BUT I take an online class so I didn't actually see this on the chalkboard. I read my lesson, watched the examples and i heard and saw the teacher from Charlie Brown Cartoons!!
The first part of my Practice problem worksheet was....

The following expression relates the variables p and q: p=q+2/q-4. Find q as a function of p

I got as far as q(p)=???????????
how do I find q???
Usually I can see the anwser and figure out how they got it....not this time!!

is there a formula or steps or rules. I don't like knowing how the problem is solved. Not just this problem but I want to know how to get the correct anwser for any one like this!!!!
Please Help!!
and
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

My condolences.

?
p=q+2/q-4

If q + 2 is in the numerator and q - 4 is in the denominator, then we need to show this by typing grouping symbols.

p = (q + 2)/(q - 4)

I'm guessing that this is the rational function in your exercise.

?
… [are] there … steps …

Yes.

Here are the steps to solve the given equation for q.

(1) Multiply both sides by the denominator

(2) Expand the lefthand side

(3) Move all terms that contain a factor of q to the lefthand side.

(4) Move all terms that do not contain a factor of q to the righthand side.

(5) Factor out q on the lefthand side

(6) Divide both sides by the other factor

These steps are shown, using a similar function, inside the two-column grid on THIS PAGE. (Look for the first grid; it contains the equation y = [x - 2]/[x + 2] with steps to solve for x.)

Please show some work, or ask specific questions, if you would like more help with this exercise. 8-)

Tough! :lol:

Thank you so much. And I meant to say that I don't like NOT knowing how a problem is solved. Math is my Fav Subject so I like to know as much as possible.!!

:?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP> I understand alot better now. By the way I just took my quiz and got a 95%!!!!!! Thanks Again! I'm sure I'll be back!
