how do you find the domain and range of {y = x^2 if x does not = 2 and 7 if x = 2}

and how do you graph it?

First plot y = x^2

What will be the domain and range of y = x^2 - if you did not have any constraint?

Now look at the constraint - and decide if it does change anything.

We show the discontinuity by putting an open circle (a "hole") at the point in the parabola where x would be 2.

Don't forget to also plot the point defined by the given information when x = 2.

EG: When x = 3, y = 4. Otherwise, y = x^2.

The graph in this example is y = x^2 with a "hole" in the parabola where x is 3.

We also plot the point (3, 4).

(Note: The axii scales in my illustration below are not equal.)
