The front and back of a greenhouse have the shape and dimensons shown in the figure below. The greenhouse is 40 feet long from front to back, and the angle at the top ofthe greenouse will be covered with screening in order to block some of the light entering the greenhouse. How many square feet of screening will be needed?

Is the height 20 feet? And the width 6 ft?

Also, what do you mean by angle? Do you mean the entire top of the building?

Hello Amanda:

Either you need to completely and unambiguously describe the figure, or you need to upload an image.

Please give us a clue as to what you already know about these types of exercises. Show any work and reasoning that you've been able to accomplish, so far.

If you already understand what the exercise is asking, then are you able to say something about why you're stuck?

(Also, please read the post titled, "Read Before Posting", if you have not already done so.)

Cheers,

~ Mark :)

I know that you are suppose to use the pythagorean theorem. I just do not understand what the question is asking. What area is trying to find?

The question is poorly worded; were it not for the 40-foot measurement given, my guess would be that the top portion (above the 6x20 rectangle) on each of the front and back walls will be covered with screen.

In other words, you would need to find the area of an isoceles triangle with a base of 20 feet in terms of the top angle, and then double it.

I'm still not sure where the screen will go. The figure does not specify the dimensions of the two 40-foot rectangles that make up the roof. The given information does not specify what percentage of the roof will be covered in screen, if the screen goes on the roof at all.

Are you sure that you've provided all of the given information?

Re: Help with a problem

Yeah, that is all that has been given to me. That is why I am so confused. thanks for your help.

So how would I go about ot figure out the other 2 sides?

To me, the phrase "other 2 sides" is ambiguous.

Please specify the two sides about which you are trying to ask.

Cheers,
