The problem is (I have forgotten most of my French so there may be an error or two)
In a rectangular field, Mr Longfield has planted cucumbers on two fifths of the area. He has also planted tomatoes on one half the area.
Determine the area of the field, in square meters, devoted to growing each of those two vegetables.
On the sentence starting "Laisse," I am unsure of an exact translation. The sense, however, seems to require indicating on the diagram the area in question.
I can translate well enough part b. Sadly it makes no sense. La livre a raisons que la raison ne sait point.
What fraction of the field will be devoted to growing tomatoes and beans if [Mr. Longfield] equally divides the the three tenths of the field that remain.
If that indeed is an accurate translation, then no wonder the student is confused. I suspect a typo in the first part of the problem, where it should read that one fifth of the field is planted in cucumbers.
