Please let me know :
"in a rectangle garden, 2/5 are cucumbers and 1/2 potatoes.
what fraction of the field will be devoted to growing tomatoes and beans if it also separates 3/10 of the remaining field?"

No, you should let us know, per posting guidelines - your work, what is the difficulty, etc. Also, please clarify the meaning of "it also separates 3/10 of the remaining field". What is "it"? Separates from what?

If I were to do this problem, I would first calculate the fraction of garden planted with (cucumber and potatoes).

What fraction of the rectangle is without cucumber + potato?

Please show us what you have tried and exactly where you are stuck.

That's the think. I don't understand the problem. i can attach a picture , but my homework is in French. I calculated the remaining space and it gives me 1/10, but the teacher said it should be 3/10.

Did you calculate:
  1. calculate the fraction of garden planted with (cucumber and potatoes). ..........................................What answer did you get?

  2. What fraction of the rectangle is without cucumber + potato? ..........................................What answer did you get?

Can you translate all text from the image?

calculate the fraction of garden planted with (cucumber and potatoes). . = 1/2 + 2/5 = 9/10
What fraction of the rectangle is without cucumber + potato? 1- 9/10 = 1/10

The problem is (I have forgotten most of my French so there may be an error or two)

In a rectangular field, Mr Longfield has planted cucumbers on two fifths of the area. He has also planted tomatoes on one half the area.

Determine the area of the field, in square meters, devoted to growing each of those two vegetables.

On the sentence starting "Laisse," I am unsure of an exact translation. The sense, however, seems to require indicating on the diagram the area in question.

I can translate well enough part b. Sadly it makes no sense. La livre a raisons que la raison ne sait point.

What fraction of the field will be devoted to growing tomatoes and beans if [Mr. Longfield] equally divides the the three tenths of the field that remain.

If that indeed is an accurate translation, then no wonder the student is confused. I suspect a typo in the first part of the problem, where it should read that one fifth of the field is planted in cucumbers.

2/5+ 1/2= 4/10+ 5/10= 9/10 (of the land surface- you didn't translate that part) is planted with cucumbers and potatoes. That leaves 1/10. Since 3/10 of the remaining 1/10 is planted with beans and tomatoes, (1/10)(3/10)= 3/100 of the entire surface is planted with beans and tomatoes.

Halls I think you mistranslated the second part, which I did actually translate.

Quelle fraction du champ = what fraction of the field

sera consacree a la culture des tomates et des haricots = will be devoted to growing tomatoes and beans

s'il separe egalement = if he divides equally

les 3/10 du champ qui reste = the three tenths of the field that remain.

All that remains will be devoted to tomatoes and beans. It does not say that 3/10s of what remains will be devoted to tomatoes and beans. Moreover, I see no way to indicate even crudely on that diagram 3% of the area, let alone 1.5% devoted to beans. The best interpretation is that the first part meant to say 1/5 and 1/2, which does leave 3/10 available to be divided in half. With 4 colors you could make a reasonable schematic on that diagram.
