I am trying to type a beginning algebra question as a first time user and I want to use different color fonts to refer to certain points but the font color button gives what looks to me like some sort of code. Do you know anything about this or can you direct me to another source who can help.

Yes, it's called BBCode, and you can read about it HERE.
You can insert various BBCode tags, by using the buttons, or you can type the tags yourself. The buttons express colors using hexidecimal numbers, but you can manually type color names, too.
