The difference between 2 positive integers is 56. one integer is three times great as the other find the integer

Can anyone help me with this step by step. we did one expample of this problem in class

let the 2 numbers be x and y

then
x-y =56

and
x =3y

sub the x=3y into the first equation so you only have 1 unknown

Hello, cd3000!

Are you working with one variable only?
. . Or two (a system of equations).

The difference between 2 positive integers is 56.
One integer is three times as great as the other.
Find the integers.
One variable

"One integer is three times the other."
. . Let x = smaller integer.
. . Then 3x = larger integer.

"Their difference is 56."
. . We have: .3x - x .= .56 . . . . now solve the equation.

Two variables

Let x = larger integer
and y = smaller integer.

"One integer is 3 times the other."
. . x .= .3y . ---> . x - 3y .= .0

"Their difference is 56."
. . x - y .= .56

We have: .x - 3y .= .0
. . . . . . . . .x - . y .= 56 . . . . now solve the system

still dont get this what do you plug in to get 56? 32 and 24?

They told you the difference was 56. The difference is also x-y so
x-y=56
