The question is kind if simple."Find the angular speed of a point on the earth's surface". That is all that is given in he problem, assuming that the radius is 6400km. How would I go about setting this up?

Angular Speed versus Linear Speed

Hello Brndo:

If you're thinking of how fast a point on the surface of the earth is moving through space as the planet rotates, then you're confusing angular speed with linear speed.

Check out a few of these links from Google to learn about the difference.

Angular speed states how many radians are swept out by a central angle per fixed unit of time. So, it has more to do with how fast the planet is rotating, not how fast points on the surface are moving.

To answer your exercise, consider the answers to the following two questions.

For a point on the surface of the earth, how many radians are swept out by the central angle in a single rotation of the planet?

How much time does this take?

Cheers,

~ Mark :)
