Finding a formula?

In my summer review, I have these two problems that are telling me to find formula for the area of a rectangle and square. I would just like to know how exactly do you determine that.

And yes, I have tried Googling it. But I cannot seem to find anything that helps me. This is the last time I'm going to ask a question on these boards. After this, I am through with bothering everyone.

I did not read the guidelines before I started posting. So, that is why I went on asking all the questions I did. I apologize for that. Thanks to all who have been patient and helpful to me.

The area of a rectangle is the length multiplied by the width, or a=l*w. The area of a square is calculated the same way (after all, "square" is just a special case of "rectangle"), but since the length and width of a square are equal, the formula could be simplified to a=l2.

I'm not sure if that is what you're looking for. If not, you'll need to provide some more information to clarify.

I have to find a formula for:

a rectangle with L=2x+3 and W=x-2

and

a square with s=2x+5

Multiply those given algebraic expressions for the sides as though they were numbers.

EG:

Find the area of a rectangle with the following dimensions.

L = x + 4

W = 3x - 7

Area = L * W

Area = (x + 4)(3x - 7)

Area = 3x^2 + 5x - 28

EG:

Find the area of a square with the following dimensions.

s = 5x + 1

Area = s^2

Area = (5x + 1)^2

Area = 25x^2 + 10x + 1

I have to find a formula for:

a rectangle with L=2x+3 and W=x-2

Start with the basic formula for area of a rectangle, a=lw.

Substitute 2x+3 for l and x-2 for w, like this: a=(2x+3)(x-2).

Finally, perform the multiplication on the right side of the equal sign (FOIL). That will give you your answer.

and

a square with s=2x+5

Basically same process as above.

By the way, all squares are rectangles.

A square is a special kind of rectangle.

A square is a rectangle whose length and width are the same (i.e., all four sides are equal).

L = s

W = s

In other words, for squares:

Area = L*W = s*s = s^2

I know this has nothing to do with the topic. But how do I delete my profile? I've looked all around in the settings and I don't see that option.

Tiahara, I just realized that the moderator names no longer appear at the top of thread pages. (I will need to locate them later.)

Please send me a private message.
