a) If a line passes thru the points (-1,-1) and (2,3) find the slope of the line.
b) Give a point-slope equation for the line.
c) Put the equation in slope-intercept form
Part (a) asks you to calculate the slope of the line by using the coordinates of the two given points in the slope formula. Perhaps, you need to start by looking at the formula.
Given coordinates of two points (X1, Y1) and (X2, Y2), the slope (m) is calculated as the difference of the two y-coordinates divided by the difference of the two x-coordinates.
m = (Y2 - Y1)/(X2 - X1)
Part (b) asks you to write an equation for the line, using the Point-Slope formula. You need the slope (m) that you find in part (a), along with the coordinates (X1, Y1), to do this.
y - Y1 = m(x - X1)
Part (c) asks you to write an equation for the same line, but in Slope-Intercept form, instead. Solve the equation that you get in part (b) for y, and you'll have it.
