marcus invested $4000 at simple annual interest. Some at 5% and the rest at 8%. If he recieved $272 in interest for one year, how much did he invest at each rate?

4000-x = amount invested at 8%

\(\displaystyle 272 = x(.05) + (4000-x)(.08)\)
