An inheritance of $900,000 is to be divided among David, Paige and Dan in the following way: Paige is to get 3/4 of what David will get, while Dan gets 1/2 of what David gets. How much did each receive?

Can you set up the proper equation needed for me to solve this word problem?

ALWAYS start by naming things. This makes reference to things far simpler and helps to clarify meaning.

D = Amount David gets
P = Amount Paige gets
N = Amount Dan gets

What is given?

D + P + N = 900000
P = (3/4)*D
N = (1/2)*D

That is enough information. You tell me how to solve it.

okay

Do I plug the data back into your equation: D + P + N = 900,000?
In other words, do I plug (3/4)*D for P and (1/2)*D for N and then apply algebra?

This is what you said:

D = Amount David gets
P = Amount Paige gets
N = Amount Dan gets

What is given?

D + P + N = 900,000
P = (3/4)*D
N = (1/2)*D

That is enough information. You tell me how to solve it.

The substitutions you suggest WILL lead to one equation in one unknown value. THAT is what we are looking for. You should be able to solve it from there.
