A maple tree has 3 branch buds at the end of each branch and 2 at each years growth of that branch. At the end of the branch 1 bud lengthens the branch and the other 2 make there be more branches. Describe this with a function and is the growth exponential?

I am 15, in 9th grade, and learning trig and basic calculus.

Year 1: 0 branches

Year 2: 2 branches

Year 3: 8 branches

Year 4: 22 branches

I don't know how x is related to y and so I am stuck in describing it with a function
