How many bags of mulch?
A bag of mulch is 2 cubic feet
There is an area that is OVAL. The OVAL is 30' long x 13' wide.
The mulch needs to cover the whole OVAL area, 3" thick.
How many bags of mulch will it take to cover the OVAL?
Divide the total amount of cubic feet needed by 2, to calculate the number of bags.
bags = volume/2
We can use the volume of an oval-shaped cylinder, to model the total amount of mulch spread.
The most common oval in beginning math classes is called an ellipse. You can use that shape.
The volume of an oval-shaped cylinder equals the area of the base (ellipse) times the height.
cylinder volume = base area * height
:idea: Each of the three given measurements (length, width, height) need to be expressed in feet, so don't forget to convert 3 inches to feet before starting.
Your job now is to find a formula for the area of an ellipse. An easy way to look up something like that is to google keywords, like
area of ellipse.
