When they say a = -1, the meaning is that symbol a represents the number -1.

You replace the symbols in the given expression with the numbers they represent.

Next, you replace symbol b with its given value, and you replace symbol c with its given value, and THEN you multiply the resulting numbers together. (Don't forget the negative sign in front of number b.)
