I need help with solving x(4) -5x(2) -36 =) I am not sure what to do with the x to the fourth?

I am also having trouble setting up this problem. The hypotenouse of a right triangle is 6 cm long. The longer leg is 2 cm longer then the shorter leg. Find the lengths of the legs of the right triangle. Round to the nearest tenth.

1) Have you tried factoring? (x^2 - 9)*(x^2 + 4) It doesn't have to BE quadratic in order to be treated LIKE a quadratic.

2) Definitions will save you. WRITE them down.

X = Length of Shorter Leg
X+2 = Length of Longer Leg

Now what?

For the other one I got the answers x= +- 3 and x=+-2i was that correct?
