In the equation 14-k=20 it says that it's being added so you subtract 14 from both side if it was beening added would it not be written as 14+-k=20 can someone how they are being added without add sign i tried five different books and none the wise please help.

14+(-k)=14-k

Adding a negative is the same as subtracting a positive.

I don't know what the 2 of you are doing/saying exactly;
you seem to want to solve: 14-k=20

step 1 : add k to both sides: 14 = 20 + k

step 2 : subtract 20 from each side: -6 = k

Over and out; k = -6
