I have a problem I am trying to figure out how to work out. Not a homework problem or anything, just a random thought I can't figure out how to solve. I am trying to find an equation that would answer questions about the electoral college. Specifically, what is the percent chance that a particular state would still be "in play" after all other states are tallied. For a specific example, say I live in Delaware, and my state gets 3 EC votes. After all of the other states are added up for red or blue respectively adding for red and subtracting for blue or vise versa, (55-38-25+18...etc), how many combinations would yield a result that is within +/-3 votes of 0? (Or each side being within 3 votes of 270 if they are added separately). How many possible combinations of EC votes would leave Delaware in play at the end? Thanks for and guidance on this!
