Hi, I always get mixed up as to what way I should divide with questions like the following

In last year’s race, there were thirty five thousand runners.
They used 0.7 million bottles of water in total.
The organiser allows the same number of bottles of water per runner
this year.
How many bottles of water per runner does she allow?

is it 0.7/35000 0r 35000/0.7 Has anyone any tips please

Thanks.

I would take 'bottles of water per runner' as Number of bottles of water divided by number of runners which would give me 0.7/35000

Hello, Flying123!

Evidently, you know that "thirty-five thousand" means: .\(\displaystyle 35 \times 1,\!000 \:=\: 35,\!000\)

But did you know that "0.7 million" means: .\(\displaystyle 0.7 \times 1,\!000,\!000 \:=\: 700,\!000\: ?\)
