If I have c2n+1 divided by c2n-1 how do I combine the subscripts? I know how to do it for exponents - it would be c2 but they're not exponents unfortunately. I think the book somehow ended up with c2n+1. Any help would be appreciated - thanks.

You wouldn't "divide" them. The subscripts are part of the names of the variables. Instead of using different letters for the different variables, whatever exercise you're working on used the same letter with different subscripts. There is no reason, unless further information in included in the exercise, to assume that dividing the variables would interact with the subscripts in any manner at all. (Without the full text of the exercise, of course, I can't speak specifically.)
