Can someone help with this word problem? How far can a person travel at a rate of 10km/hr in 3 hrs, given that the rate on the return on the same road is of 50km/hr?

Is that the exact wording of the exercise, or did you rephrase it?

It would make more sense to me, if it were to ask about a three-hour roundtrip with different rates for each direction.
