How do I set up these problems? I am confused.

A train leaves Los Angeles at 2pm. A second train leaves the same station in the same direction at 4pm. The second train travels 24mph faster than the first. If the second train overtakes the first at 7pm, what is the speed of each of the two trains?

Maria jogs to the country at a rate of 10mph. She returns along the same route at 6 mph. If the total trip took 1 hour 36 minutes, how far did she jog?

Question -1

What do we need to find? → what is the speed of each of the two trains?

Let the speed of the first train = F

Let the speed of the second train = S = F + 24..........................................................(1)

From 2 PM - 7 PM (5 hrs.), the first train travels a distance of d = F * 5

From 4 PM - 7 PM (3 hrs.), the second train travels a distance of d = (F+24) * 3

These distances are equal → F * 5 = (F+24) * 3 ..........................................................(2)

Solve for F from (2) - and solve for S from (1)
