I do not how to set up this word problem and I am lost.

d=rt

Maria jogs to the country at a rate of 10mph. She returns along the same route at 6mph. If the total trip took 1 hour 36 minutes, how far did she jog?

Do you understand what the following example expression represents?

(58 mph)(1.5 hrs)

Just checking. :cool: I'm not sure of your meaning, when you write, "I am lost". It's better to design specific questions for us. Otherwise, we have to guess. If it's busy around here, tutors might not be willing to invest much time guessing on your behalf.

When you read the given information in your exercise, do you recognize what things are equal to one another? This is required, before you can begin thinking about writing equations.

Also, you should realize that this exercise states two different time units; each rate is given in terms of miles per hour, and the total trip time is stated in terms of some hours & minutes.

You will need to work with one time unit only, and I suggest that you use hours. In other words, convert the 36-minutes part to an equivalent number of hours. Do you know how to convert minutes to hours?

How did you come with (58mph)(1.5hrs)? I came up with (60mph)(1.6hrs)
1hr=60min
36/60 minutes=3/5=0.6

In my previous post, the expression (58 mph)(1.5 hr) is an EXAMPLE only.

That is why I referred to it as an EXAMPLE.

Are you able to tell me what that EXAMPLE represents, in your own words?
