How do you get the difference of the rates?


**no need to solve just need helping figuring out how to get the rates**

The difference of the rates is given in the question as 1.2mph or 12/10 mph.

You now need to solve the equation given for x.
 
You're told that the difference of the rates is 1.2 mph!

To get the individual rates, you can solve the equation shown (to get x, the distance for the slower hiker), and then put that into each of the two expressions for their rates, x/2 and (12-x)/2. (The, of course, check that these differ by 1.2.)
