It took Al 20 mins to row across a river. It's current was 8 miles an hour. He travelled @ 10 mph.. the current is the same right across. How wide was the river ? Would distance = speed. time work ? Thank you.

What do you need to find? How wide was the river ?

Define:

Width of river = W

Al would travel distance R along the river due to the current.

He will have to travel distance W perpendicular to the current.

How far he will have to travel on the river? (use Pythagorus)
