Hi. I was wondering if my answer for this problem was correct:

You are shopping for school supplies. A store is offering a 10% discount on binders and 20% discount on packages of paper. You want to buy 5 binders originally marked $2.98 each and 10 packages of paper originally marked $0.79 each. Write an expression that shows how much you will save after discounts.

2.98 * .9* 5 + .79 * .8 * 10 = x
2.98 * 5 + .71 * 10 = x
13.40 + 7.10 = x
$20.50 = x

2.98 * 5 = 14.90
.79 * 10 = 7.90
14.90 + 7.90 = 22.80

22.80 - 20.50 = $2.30

1) Wow, that color is hard to read. Maybe it's just my screen.
2) You are SO close.
3) I am very pleased that you translated perfectly from a 10% discount to multiplying by 0.9 and a 20% discount to multiplying by 0.8.
3) You missed some arithmetic on the first pass: 0.79 * 0.8 = 0.632. It looks like you used 90% again.
4) You solved for the discount, but I don't think you quite answered the question.

"Write an expression that shows how much you will save after discounts."

It doesn't tell you to solve it. Just write the expression.

Also, it wants the discount, which is where you ended, but you could write that directly.

(2.98 * 0.1 * 5) + (0.79 * 0.2 * 10) = Total Savings due to the discounts.
 
So would it be?:

((2.98 * .1) + 2.98) * 5 + ((.79 * .2) + .79) * 10 = x
3.28 * 5 + .95 * 10 = x
16.4 + 9.5 = x
$25.90 = x

2.98 * .1 * 5 + .79 * .2 * 10 = d
1.49 + 1.58 = $3. 07
 
i just noticed...thats messed up...$25.90 isnt supposed to be larger than $22.80..im confused now :?

I don't know what that first part was. Let's just forget about it.

The part I quoted is a thing of beauty. You wrote an expression for the discount, as you were asked. You also solved for the discount.
 
the answer to the problem is 19.73$

5 buinders
each buinder is 2.79.

2.79 x 5= 14.90.

now. 14.90 x 10% is what you would SAVE. So 14.90 x .10= 1.49

14.90
- 1.49
_____
13.01


Now then,
you have 10 packs of paper. each being .79c.

.79c x 10= $7.90

you get a 20% discount so 7.90 x .20=1.58

7.90
- 1.58
6.32

Finally,

13.01 + 6.32= $19.33

As Eliz told you, concentrate on proper spelling and punctuation
(quit blaming your typing), and act a little more mature: though
that ain't easy sometimes (I still act immaturely now and then. :)
