Could somebody help me out with direct variation and the difference between that and slope. I have a test tomorrow and don't understand it. Please reply.

Hi langston,

\(\displaystyle \text{ An equation in the form of y = kx, where } k \ne 0 \text{, is called } \underline{\text{direct variation}}.\)

\(\displaystyle \text{So, for example, if the graph of the equation y=2x passes through (2, 4) and (5, 10), }\)

\(\displaystyle \text{show that the constant of variation and the slope are equal}.\)

\(\displaystyle \text{2 is the constant of variation in the equation y=2x.}\)

\(\displaystyle m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}=\frac{10-4}{5-2}=\frac{6}{3}=2\)

\(\displaystyle \text{The constant of variation = slope = 2}\)

\(\displaystyle \text{I hope that helps a bit.}\)
