At what age do children usually learn about derivatives?
I am supposed to do an essay on them, but their use (finding maximum or minimum values) is so simple that I think it's for like 13-14 year old kids. If not, how can I make it more complex or is it complex enough and I just view it as simple?

In North America the average pre-university schooling is ten to twelve years. A very few pupils are able to study any calculus courses. Thus the vast majority do calculus in university. You asked about when children learn about derivatives. Well my immediate reaction is that children do not usually do that. Once in a while there is an exceptionally advanced student who lives in a metropolitan area is able to do a course of calculus at a local university. On the other hand, many secondary schools offer what is called advanced placement calculus for students in their eleventh or twelfth year. Students who have done AP calculus will start in calculus II or III at university.
