Here's the problem:
Find the real numbers x and y
-7 + 2yisqrt(3) = x + 6isqrt(3)

i do not understand the concept of the real numbers being equal and the same with the imaginary parts. Please help Thanks!

a, b, c, and d are Real

a + bi = c + di if, and only if, a = c and b = d. That's it.

You have:

-7 = x <== Not much to solve, here.

and

2y*sqrt(3) = 6*sqrt(3) <== Only a little to solve, here.

Perhaps it is easier than you are thinking.

so do I just divide 6y by 2 now? so x= 3 ?

Absolutely not!

You should have taken algebra. In algebra you would have been presented many problems stated like this, "Solve for x." or "Solve for P."

That is what you must do. Solve for the desired results.

You must remember ALL previous classes and techniques. All of them! There is a reason why things are taught in sequence. Remember...
