In this equation, x + y3 = 8, the book says y is a function of x. I don't understand how to figure it out when y is cubed. Sorry, I'm not sure how to type an exponent on my laptop keyboard...lol.

Like this: x + y^3 = 8

Since y is a function of x, then y depends on x for its values; so:
y = (8 - x)^(1/3) ; kapish?
