I solved this once on my own but now I forgot how I did it. Can you help please?
A sample family budget says that 8% of of a family budget of $4500 per month is spent on clothing. Another family with a budget of $3720 spends $375 per month. By how much do they exceed the sample family budget?

.08(4500) = 360
375/3720 = .1 or 10 %
.08(3720)=297.6
375-297.6 = $77.40
The answer is $77.40
I guess I remembered after all, is there an easier way to set up this problem?

You must only organize.

Sample Family #1

Budget1 = $4500
Clothing1 = Budget1 * 8% = $4500 * 0.08 = $360

Another Family #2

Budget2 = $3270
Clothing2 = $375

The Question (very poorly worded): "By how much do they exceed the sample family budget?" or rephrased: By how much does "Another Family's Clothing Budget" exceed the "Sample Family's Clothing Budget"?

Clothing2 - Clothing1 = $375 - $360 = $15

So, what on Earth were you doing?

1) 375/3720 is a bit more than 10%.
2) Why are we applying percent #1 to Family #2's budget?

Organize.
