A family with a monthly income of $3,720 spends $375 a month on clothing. By what amount do they exceed the sample budget?
Sample budget: based on a family income of $4,500 a month
Clothing is 8% according to the pie chart.
the answer is $77.40
375= .08(3720)
375/3720=
I have no idea how to set up the equation. The text book does not give any examples of this.

No more than eight percent of their monthly income is supposed to be for clothing. What percent of their income does $375 represent?

If they had spent 8% of their income - how much would they have spent = 3720 * 8% = 3720*.08 = $297.60

in reality they had spent -- $375

How much did they overspent?

Thank you I get it now I hope. I am studying hard for a GKT math test. I sure appreciate your tolerance. I have gotten more help here than at school.. I have two weeks yet before the test. I still need help to set up equations for word problems. I went to recommended sites and read the material which helps some. I am working the practice test now so I hope to be alright from here. Where can I get more practice on word problems?
