Cryptic sum

I think I stuffed up. Realised that magis is not a word - magi is plural. Was meant to be an anagram of sigma (sum). Sorry!!

Magis is a word - but not those gift bearing kings....
Magis Magis is a Latin word that means "more" or "greater". It is related to ad majorem Dei gloriam, a Latin phrase meaning "for the greater glory of God", the motto of the Society of Jesus. Magis refers to the philosophy of doing more for Christ, and therefore doing more for others. Wikipedia

Thanks Subby. I was thinking it meant "wise men" but then realised it didn't need the s at the end.

I think I stuffed up …
I know the feeling well, ha.

And, it's worse than you think! Denis would cry, "Illegal!!!", as he did to me many a time. It's so easy to want to do, but, I eventually learned that anagram fodder needs to appear in the clue directly; synonyms for anagram fodder are not kosher.

I'd suggested, in our bantering, that we ought to allow it, if the puzzle were presented with disclaimer. It could start a whole new cryptic category! We'd know from the get-go that an anagram's in play and we need to come up with the fodder. Could be a fun challenge, I'd thought.

Alas, Denis was weaned in a group with very strict enforcement of "standards" (eg: public, wet-noodle lashings on those who stray from the established path).

Anyhoo, I'll post a reclue in my response to Sub. Also, trying your clue had led me to think of:

Cats mix up more Spanish (5)

Wise men mixed farts (5) \(\;\) <-- Illegal, ha!

;)

Well, that's an easy fix.

Doing more for Christ mixed up Sigma. (5)

True enough, sometimes.

Also, I'd have thought magi is like moose (both singular and plural). Turns out it's not. Each of the wise men is a magus.

By the way, Ms Merriam says magi could be a group of voodooists, sorcerers, or witches. I like it.

?

In respect of Denis, I'll try to stick to the rules. I think I'm better at solving them than making them up. (Hangs head in shame.)
