cost per oz of mix of 200 oz at $5.50/oz, 500 oz at $2/oz

Find the cost per ounce of a mixture of 200oz of a cologne that costs $5.50 per pounce and 500oz of cologne that costs 2.00 per ounce.

I wrote my equation a 200*5.50=1100oz/ 500*2.00=502 Oz / 700 Oz * x

700x=1602.....what did i do wrong?

1) How many ozs. will I have?
200oz + 500 oz= 700 oz

2) How much will I have spent?
200x$5.50 + 500 x $2.00 =$ 1100 + $1,000
I spent $2100 for 700 oz

3) cost per oz? $2100/700 = $3 per oz

I wrote my equation a 200*5.50=1100oz

When we multiply ounces times dollars per ounce, we end up with dollars.

So, this result is not 1,100 ounces. It is $1,100.

500*2.00=502 Oz

500 * 2 = 1000, not 502.

This mistake REALLY concerns me. Why do you think that 500 times 2 is the same as 500 plus 2? :shock:

Again, the result is dollars: $1,000.

700 Oz * x

700x=1602.....what did i do wrong?

This equation looks good, except that 1602 is the wrong dollar total because you did not multiply 500*2 correctly.

Replace 1602 with the correct value, and then solve for x to find the cost-per-ounce.
