Imagine a rectangle that is 30yds in width and 20yds in height. The total area is 600 sq. yds.

Now, I had to create this rectangle and the simple shapes that reside inside of it on the computer. I made the rectangle's width 9" and the height 6". Every 1.5" = 5yds.

Some of my shapes are smaller than 1.5", and that's where my problem lies. I have absolutely no idea how to find the equivelant in yards.

I have a circle that's .15" in diameter. I need to find out what .15" is in yards so that I can continue on to get the area.

Does anyone know how to do this? It would help me out so much!

Hello muimui,

Here's what you do to convert .15 inches to yards.

\(\displaystyle \frac{.15 in}{1} \cdot \frac{1 yd}{36 in}=\frac{.15}{36}yd=\frac{1}{240} yd\)

you are using scale ... \(\displaystyle 1.5" = 5 \, yds\)

set up a proportion ...

\(\displaystyle \frac{.15"}{1.5"} = \frac{x \, yds}{5 \, yds}\)

\(\displaystyle \frac{1}{10} = \frac{x}{5}\)

\(\displaystyle 10x = 5\)

\(\displaystyle x = \frac{1}{2} \, yd\)
