I don't understand how to do this.

Convert (x^2+3x+1)/(x+2) to a mixed number.

Have you learned how to do longhand polynomial division?

That would give you a Quotient and a Remainder.

Divide x + 2 into x^2 + 3x + 1, longhand.

The mixed number is: Quotient + Remainder/Divisor

If you need lessons on how to divide one polynomial by another, google keywords: polynomial long division

Watch a short video; read through some examples.

I welcome specific questions. 8-)

\(\displaystyle \frac{x^2+3x+1}{x+2} \ = \ x+1-\frac{1}{x+2}, \ I'll \ leave \ the \ check \ up \ to \ you.\)
