Hello all,

New to this site and wondering if anybody could help me out with a problem I'm having? If you have any follow up questions / the below is not clear enough, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks in advance!

Components
X
Y
Z
Target Numbers
45
65
15

- The above amount of X,Y,Z are ‘the targets’ of this project – these are fixed.

Components
X
Y
Z
1 unit of A
20
0
5
1 unit of B
8
30
2
1 unit of C
0
10
1
1 unit of D
0
4
4

- X,Y,Z components are all per 1 unit of A,B,C,D.
- A,B,C,D units can be split into whatever value required.
- Each of A,B,C,D must be used (in the priority of A,B,C,D)

Question:
How to calculate the amounts (how many units) of A,B,C,D which will make the sum of their respective X,Y,Z components = the above ‘target’? (or within an acceptable margin…say 5%)

Hi Subhotosh Khan,

Thanks for your response.
You have put your finger on my main problem - I really don't know where to start.

This is the final step to a personal project I've been working on. Any help would be hugely appreciated?

Thanks again.

Does the number of units have to be an integer? Or does "A,B,C,D units can be split into whatever value required" mean non-integers are ok.

You obviously can't reach your target of 45 by just using multiples of 20 and 8.

Eg 1*20 + 3*8 = 44 (which is within 5% of your goal).

Is that what you mean?

Harry the cat,

thanks for commenting. Non-integers are perfectly acceptable. As you say, you wouldn't be able to do it with integers only.

thanks
