I dont understand how to do this problem, the instructions say solve each equation.

-3(4-x)=18
is this the correct answer:
x=6

this was on my take home test, any help with out the answer would be good please, these confuse me:
10x-9=4(x-1)+1

-a+6(a+4)=3(a+5)+1

-3(4-x)=18
is this the correct answer:
x=6

The way to check to see if it is the correct solution is as follows:
Since you think x is 6, plug the 6 into the equation in place of the x and see if the equation tells the truth.

-3(4-6)=18

gather terms inside parenthesis... 4-6=-2

-3(-2) = 18

Simplify...

-3 X -2 = 6

6 = 18 Is this the truth? If not, then x is NOT = 6.

I dont understand the bottom 2, can some one please help me with thoes, the same instructions apply here also. :wink:

Don't get ahead of yourself (or us)...

Did you figure out the first one?

-3(4-x)=18

The next step could be:

-12 + 3x = 18
3x = 30

If you thought it was 6, one of the above was probably not correct as you did your algebra. Perhaps you forgot to multiply the -x inside the parentheses by the -3 in front of the parentheses. And then maybe you subtracted 12 from both sides instead of adding it. Maybe you're having trouble understanding how to use the distributive property, or maybe just remembering how to do the arithmetic. If you can't get this one right, the next two are going to be more trouble...

Are you with us so far? If so, show your initial work for the second two, and we will be very happy to help in any way we can.

1. for -3(4-x)=18
-3(4-x)=18
-3(4-10)=18
-3(6)=18
18=18

2. 10x-9=4(x-1)+1
10(3)-9=4(5-1)+1
30-9=4(5-1)+1
21=20

i'm getting stuck on this one ^--
