Hi! I'm MissieMousie and it's been a while since I've done the school thing. On Tuesday (1/23/07) I have to take a placement test called the ASSET/COMPASS test. I've been working on brushing up my skills and stuff, but am having a hard time figuring things out. I would be most appreciative if someone could assist me in figuring some things out. They come from a variety of sections. I've been working on stuff from the following websites.

http://www.testprepreview.com/compass_practice.htm (Self Assessment Modules).
http://www.testprepreview.com/compasslinks.htm (Compass Improvement Links).

I've gone through both of them and still don't understand quite a bit of stuff.

A few of the problems that I am having a hard time figuring out how to even set it up are:

1: Melinda's lights went out. She has 3 pairs of red socks in her drawer, 2 pairs of black socks, and 5 pairs of white socks. What is the minimum number of pairs she must remove form the drawer to ensure that she has a pair of each colour?

2: If the average arithmetic mean of 8, 12, 15, 21, x and 11 is 17 then what is x?
http://www.testprepreview.com/modules/mathematics2.htm #39

3: What is 35% of a number if 12 is 15% of a number?
http://www.testprepreview.com/modules/mathematics3.htm #4

4: In a college, some courses contribute more towards an overall GPA than other courses. For example, a science class is worth 4 points; mathematics is worth 3 points; History is worth 32 points; and English is worth 3 points. The values of the grade letters are as follows, A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. What is the GPA of a student who made a C in Trigonometry, a "B" in American History, an "A" in Botany, and a "B" in Microbiology?

5: How many cubed pieces of fudge that are 3 inches on an edge can be packed into a Christmas tin that is 9 inches deep by 12 inches wide by 8 inches high with the lid still being able to be closed?

If anyone who can help, please feel free to contact me!! :) I do better with steps rather than just getting the answer. I need to know how it works. Answers I got.... I just have to figure how to get to it.

Thanks a lot!!!

1)
the maximum number of socks she could take is 10
if she took 5 pairs they could all be white
if she took 3 more pairs they could all be red
so she could take 8 pair of socks and still not have a black pair

minimum number to gaurantee one pair of each color 9 answer

2)
8,12,15,21,x,11 6 integers
average = [8+12+15+21+x+11] / 6
but average=17

17=[67+x]/6 multiply each side my 6
102=67+x
x=35 answer

3)

12 is 15% of a number, what is the number?
let the number be x.
15%of x=12
.15x=12 divide both sides by .15
x=1200/15
x=80

what is 35% of 80?
answer = .35[80]
answer is 28

4)
"c"[3] +"b"[32]+"a"[4]+"b"[4]
where a=4,b= 3,c=2

grade points= 2[3]+3[32]+4[12]+3[4]
grade points= 6+96+48+12
grade points = 162

value of course's is [3+32+4+4]=43
average grade points = 162/43
average grade points = 3.8 a "A-" answer

5)
volume is 12x8x9= 869
volume of fudge=3x3x3=27
maximum number is [9x12x8] / [3x3x3]
maximum= 4x8=32

but can't have more than 2 layers [6 inchs] in 8 inch height
each layer would be 9/3long by 12/3 wide or 3x4 pieces of fudge in each layer
12pieces per layer x2 layers= 24 pieces of fudge answer

***huggles all around!!***

Thank you all for your assistance. My placement test is tomorrow and I think I may be able to understand some things and continue through the problems that are like that. I think there are a few more that are completely baffling, but, I'm gonna keep on keeping on and see what happens!

Thanks again so much!!
