Here is the story problem I'm stumped on. Emily's score for a Mathematics test was 5% higher than her score for an English test. If Emily scored 84 points on her Mathematics test how many points did she score for the English Test.

I've set it up this way. Her Math score is 105% of her English score. So I set it up with 84/105%X100% and got and answer that isn't in whole numbers. So I know it is wrong.

The book has the answer of 80. How did they get that?

That is incorrect

What number did you get?

Have you been taught "rounding" numbers?

I got 67.5, but that can't be right because the answer in the back of the book says it should be 80. I know how to do rounding, but None of these problems have used that technique. They are trying to make it easy, I guess.

Huh? 84/105 = .8 ; .8 *100 = 80

Next time, go this way: 84 / 1.05 = 80

I guess I just miscalculated. I was reducing 105 and 100 be dividing each by 5 and getting 84/25*20. Then reducing again to get 84/5* 4. This gives me 67.2 I still don't see my mistake. I like your correct answer and I get it that way, but I don't see what I'm doing wrong so I don't get it in my calculation.

Nevermind I see it now. 25 X 5 is really 125 not 105.

Thanks for everything.
