hello, i am trying to solve a certain problem, hopefully i can explain it well enough.....i am looking for a formula. (using excel)

i have 3 scenarios, i need a formula that satisfies all 3 scenarios.

scenario 1

we have object A which is .80 (20% under)
we have object B which is .80 (also 20% under)

scenario 2
object A is .7 (30% under)
object B is 1.3 (30% over)

scenario 3
object A is 1.3 (30%over)
object B is 1.3 (also 30% over)

what i need to do is combine object A with object B because i am then applying the solution of these to another object....and i need a formula so that i can come out with an appropriate solution for all three scenarios.

what i have tried-

multiplication isnt working for me, (1.3*1.3)=1.69, i feel as if multiplication is inflating this number a little too much (im looking to combine the percents so the solution is more like 1.60 instead of 1.69...i dont want to add 30% to object C and then add another 30% to object C....i want to combine object A and B first before applying to object C

another example how multiplication isnt working for me (1.3*.7)=.91

its .91 and i need that to be 1

im looking for more like an additive approach

1.3+1.3=2.6 then minus 1 is 1.6...that works
.7+1.3=2 then minus 1 is 1 ......that works

but here is where its not working for me

lets say the numbers instead of .7 and 1.3 are .90 and 1.20

when i combine .90 and 1.20 its 2.1 then minus 1 is 1.1

im looking for that result to be 1.05 (right in the middle of .9 and 1.2) instead of the 1.1

now if i take .9 and add 1.2 thats 2.1 then divide by 2 that gives me 1.05

perfect..works in that scenario

but if u take 1.3+1.3 thats 2.6 then divide by 2 that gives me 1.3

i need that to be 1.6....

what am i doing wrong? i need something that can satisfy each scenario, thanks for any help.

What, exactly, are you trying to do? What is the exact text of, and instructions for, this exercise?

When you reply, please be sure to include all the definitions, such as what is meant by "scenarios", "over" and "under", the "objects", and "combining" the objects. Once we know what needs to be done, we may be able to advise on how to accomplish it.

Thank you! ;)

hey..thanks for the reply.....

i am trying to make a program for baseball....i have that the pitcher allows 10% more homeruns than average...so his number will be 1.10...the field they play the game at allows 10% more homeruns than average as well..so that is also 1.10

now i need to apply these to each other (combine them into 1 number) because i then will be applying this info to the batter

its just when i use multiplication it is inflatting the number a little too much....and i cant come up with a proper way using addition that satisfies all the scenarios

scenario 1 (pitcher 1.10 and field 1.10)
scenario 2 (pitcher .7 and field .7)
scenario 3 (pitcher 1.2 and field .9)

sometimes i can find a forumula that will work when both the pitcher and field are both above 1
but then if both numbers are below 1 that same formula wont work.

hope i am being clear...thanks for the time
