If f (x)= 3x-1/2 and f-1 is the inverse of f, what is the value of f-1 (3)

Help would I add 3x-1/2=3 and subtract 1/2 to both sides this one was tricky.

What is the general method for finding an inverse to f(x)? How do you check your work?
