This is an Extra credit prob. my teacher gave me and i really need an answer because it is worth a lot of points. If you can give me the answer, i will get out of failing and it can turn my grade up high so PLEASE HELP! THAnks soooo much.
Observe this passage carefully:

Fred and Ethyl are in a race.
They both run tha same rate and walk the same rate.
Fred runs half the distance and walks half the distance.
Ethyl walks half the time and runs half the time.

Who wins? Explain your answer in a 2 column proof. Prove A + B ? C.

On the right side of this 2 column proof you have to put how you got your answer for each letter. Ex: theorems, postulates, properties, like how you do a normal proof.

A= Freds walking time
B= Fred's running time
C= Ethyl's running time
D = Total race time
R= Run rate (both)
W= Walk rate (both)
R?W= Running is faster

Use this to help: find a substitute R?W and plug it in for R and W.
Fred
D/2 = AW = BR

Ethyl
D = C/2W + C/2 R

AW + BR = CW/2 + CR/2

Two big hints: Ethyl wins because Fred takes more time. Running is faster than walking but you have to write a proof how ethyl wins.
This is going to be a big proof and my teacher says it took him 2 hours. show work also please so i know how you got the answer. and PLEASE BE CORRECT Thanks soo much

So where are you stuck?

Re: insane proof

well i dont know how to do proofs that good at all, and i just dont get this problem at all and im only in Geometry and this is an extra credit problem that is worth an A. It took my teacher 2-3 hours just to find the answer and If the answer is wrong i cant have the extra credit points .. AND I AM DESPERATE TO GET THE ANSWER so Please help me out people PLEASE!!

If this is an EXTRA CREDIT problem (and you say that it is) then YOU must do the work since YOU are to get the credit. It doesn't seem right to ask someone else to do the work for you. so......so sorry. You may want to remember a few important facts....

distance = rate * time

distance / rate = time

distance / time = rate

Re: insane proof

Well then tell me how to this problem cause i dont have a clue what to do. Can you at least start me off with it at least????

Start by assuming that the total distance is D

Then Fred walks the distance D/2 in a time A

What is Fred's walking speed?

What is Ethel's walking speed?

and continue......
