1. In a circle whose diameter is 2 inches a chord is 6 inches from the center. What is the length of the chord?

I think you had better re-examine your question. How can the chord be 6 inches from the center if the circle is only 2 inches in diameter?.

Sure the numbers shouldn't be reversed. Maybe "A circle whose diameter is 6 inches has a chord 2 inches from the center. How long is the chord?".

Sry I should have put 20 inches.

1. In a circle whose diameter is 20 inches a chord is 6 inches from the center. What is the length of the chord?

In a circle of diameter 20 the radius is 10.
We are considering an isosceles triangle with congruent sides of length 10 and an altitude from the vertex angle of length 6. Therefore, if y is half the length of the cord \(\displaystyle y^2 + 6^2 = 10^2 \quad \Rightarrow \quad y = 8.\)
So the length of the cord is 16.
